Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Convention on International Civil Aviation in Chicago

On 8 December 2014, in Chicago an extraordinary session of the ICAO Council to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Chicago Convention was held. In 1944, delegates from 54 countries met at the Stevens Hotel Ballroom in Chicago at the invitation of the United States of America, where they signed the Convention on International Civil Aviation. 70 years later in the same Ballroom at Hilton Chicago Permanent Representatives of the Council of ICAO including the Polish representative Dr. Małgorzata Polkowska gathered to celebrate this important anniversary in aviation sector.

The meeting was opened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr Ban Ki-moon with the participation of the Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, Administrator Michael Huerta, as well as ICAO Council President Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu and ICAO Secretary General Raymond Benjamin.
The meeting was also attended by international aviation experts and the heads of many aviation organizations from around the world. As part of the session, the 36 Council of ICAO Representatives addopted a special Resolution to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Chicago Convention and emphasize its continuing importance for the global development of civil aviation and to support the global air transport market access for all citizens and businesses around the world.
